Masonry Package - Brancaster Staithe

At S. Clark Builders, we have a deep appreciation for traditional building techniques and the unique character of Norfolk homes. This recent masonry project in the picturesque coastal village of Brancaster Staithe allowed us to showcase our expertise in stonework and flint knapping, creating a truly exceptional residence that blends seamlessly with its surroundings while incorporating modern design elements.

The Challenge

Our clients in Brancaster Staithe were building their dream home and wanted to incorporate natural, locally-sourced materials that reflected the character of the North Norfolk coast. They envisioned a home that honoured traditional craftsmanship but also offered a contemporary feel. The project required a high level of skill and attention to detail to execute the intricate stonework and flint detailing to the highest standard

Skills used

Specialised Brickwork, Flint Knapping, Tile Creasing

Materials

Portland Stone, Flint Cobbles, Tile

The Solution: A Masterclass in Masonry

Working closely with the architect and the homeowners, we developed a masonry package that fulfilled their vision, incorporating a variety of materials and techniques:

1. Exterior Elegance: Portland Stone, Flint Cobbles, and Tile Creasing

The exterior of the home is a testament to the beauty of natural materials. We used locally sourced Portland stone, renowned for its durability and elegant appearance, to create striking architectural features. This was expertly combined with traditional flint cobbles, a material synonymous with North Norfolk’s coastal architecture. To add further visual interest and demonstrate our mastery of detail, we incorporated tile creasing details into the exterior walls. This traditional technique, involving the careful placement of angled tiles, creates a distinctive textured effect and adds a touch of artistry to the facade.

2. Interior Warmth: Flint Walls, Tile Creasing, and Stone Accents

The use of natural materials continued inside the home. We constructed internal walls using hand-selected flint, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. These walls also featured intricate tile creasing details, mirroring the exterior design and adding a unique textural element to the interior spaces. To further enhance the aesthetic, we incorporated stone door surrounds, a stone skirting, and a stone fascia, all crafted from the same beautiful Portland stone used on the exterior, providing a sense of continuity and elegance.

3. A Focal Point: Curved Flint Wall with a Freestanding Wood Burner

One of the home’s most striking features is a curved internal flint wall, also meticulously constructed with tile creasing details. This unique design element creates a natural focal point in the living space. The area was specifically designed to accommodate a freestanding wood burner, adding both warmth and a touch of rustic charm to the modern interior. The use of locally sourced materials, such as those used in this project, are becoming more popular in order to reduce the carbon footprint of a build.
